AI's costs were never cancelled. They were stretched: the same server is an expense over five years and an asset over twenty-five.

JUDGMENT判断The bill is not being avoided. It is being scheduled late. In mid-October, several outlets returned to the same set of numbers, all pointing back to a call at the end of July: Microsoft CFO Amy Hood said that from fiscal 2027 the company would extend the estimated useful life of its data centers and office buildings from 15 years to 25. On the same call, calendar-2026 capital spending guidance came down from about $190 billion to about $175 billion. Hood's caveat was explicit — apart from the accounting effect, the investment plan is unchanged.

FACT事实Three figures hold this together. Leases signed but not yet commenced rose from $92.7 billion a year earlier to $329.1 billion at the end of June 2026. Meta's operating margin fell to 31% from 43% a year earlier, and free cash flow dropped to $784 million from $8.55 billion; CFO Susan Li attributed the expense growth to higher depreciation, data center operating costs and third-party cloud spend. In the April–June quarter, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon and Meta spent $165 billion on buildings and equipment and charged $37 billion of depreciation against profit. A year earlier the pair was $88 billion and $25 billion. Spending rose 87%; the depreciation charge rose 47%.

SPECULATION推演The gap is time. The four expect to spend roughly $730 billion in 2026 against about $150 billion of annual depreciation. The rest has not disappeared; it sits in income statements from 2027 onward, arriving year by year whether or not the customers do. Accounting calls this depreciation. Operationally it is a cost that has already happened and has not yet been admitted. Michael Burry has spent months on this arithmetic: the industry depreciates GPUs over five to six years while Nvidia's architecture cycle runs 12 to 18 months. He puts the cumulative overstatement of industry profit at more than $176 billion between 2026 and 2028. That figure cannot be verified from outside, but the mechanism it describes holds — management sets the life, and a longer life makes this year's earnings thicker. The ratio to watch next is simple: depreciation growth divided by cloud revenue growth. Azure guided to about 45%, AWS to about 37%. If depreciation outruns revenue, margins compress for reasons that have nothing to do with demand.

OPINION观点What interests me is which variable a company can move on its own. Demand needs a customer's signature. Power needs a grid operator's approval. A site needs a local government. A depreciation schedule needs a board. That is why the schedule moves first, and why it is so often read as operational improvement. The S&P 500 ran a 17% margin in the April–June quarter, the highest in FactSet records going back to 2009. Over the same period, free cash flow as a share of profit came in at roughly negative 15% for the four largest builders and about 85% for the index. Both numbers are correct. They are standing in different years. When you look at a business, look first at how thin it has sliced its costs.
